When I was growing up in the 70s, one of my favorite things was watching Saturday morning cartoons. During the breaks between shows, they would show the Schoolhouse Rocks cartoons and I always loved “I’m Just a Bill”.
It all starts with an idea.
That’s where the OCMS Delegation Committee comes in. The Delegation Committee is comprised of OCMS physician members who serve as the county’s representatives to the Michigan State Medical Society’s (MSMS) physician governing body.
Each year they present ideas and proposed solutions to those ideas, to the Delegation Committee for consideration. These ideas are considered resolutions. Topics range from medical economic issues, legislative actions, public health, or patient advocacy. The delegation considers the ideas presented, and either approves them, disapproves them, or amends them. If they are either approved, or approved as amended, they are then submitted to MSMS and lobbied by a member of the delegation at the annual meeting.
MSMS will then take the resolutions that are approved and some will become part of MSMS policy and some will be taken by the Michigan delegates to the American Medical Association’s (AMA) annual meeting in June to be lobbied. This past June, the Michigan delegates presented 14 resolutions to the AMA. These resolutions, if approved, can also become part of AMA policy or they could be part of what the AMA will lobby to Congress to write a bill for. The bill that could go to committee, pass the House and Senate and be signed by the President to become a law.
See, it all starts with an idea.
We are currently seeking new delegates for the OCMS Delegation Committee. If you have ideas that you would possibly like to see become a law someday, we welcome you to attend one of our meetings or email me for more information at email@example.com.
