Human trafficking is a form of modern slavery -- a multi-billion-dollar criminal industry that denies freedom to 20.9 million people around the world. And no matter where you live, chances are it's happening nearby. From the girl forced into prostitution at a truck stop, to the man discovered in a restaurant kitchen, stripped of his passport and held against his will. All trafficking victims share one essential experience: the loss of freedom.

In support of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, OCMS would like to provide some resources to those that may encounter victims of human trafficking.
  • Two years ago, OCMS joined with the Wayne County Medical Society of Southeast Michigan and the Macomb County Medical Society to produce two videos on human trafficking. Click here to view the video that was produced for training purposes for health care professionals. Click here to view the one minute PSA.
  • The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) has resources for mental health professionals, law enforcement personnel, health care professionals, and survivors on the signs of trafficking and services for human trafficking survivors. Click here for more information.
  • The Polaris Project Polaris is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization that works to combat and prevent modern-day slavery and human trafficking. Their work has included starting a toll-free number and text line to report human trafficking. For more information on this project, click here.
  • Lastly, the Wayne County Medical Society of Southeast Michigan (WCMSSM) and the WCMS Foundation, have continued to be at the forefront of this issue, producing a 39-minute video that is targeted towards adolescents and young adults to bring awareness on the topic of human trafficking. The WCMSSM is also currently working on a video with the Michigan Attorney General’s office to use for training purposes for health care professionals on recognizing and preventing human trafficking. Thank you Camille for your comment. Bringing awareness to human trafficking will continue to be an important part of OCMS. We hope that in some way this has helped to save and change lives.
